Being a Resident

Certification

Residents who successfully complete all aspects of the Summer Institute training will be issued a Resident Teacher Certificate. The Resident Teacher Certificate was created to allow outstanding individuals with no previous education coursework the opportunity to teach while working to achieve a Standard Professional Teaching Certificate (SPC I). The Resident Teacher Certificate is a temporary certificate, valid for two years, which indicates Residents are highly qualified to teach their certification area in a Baltimore City Public School classroom. During their first 18 months in the classroom, Residents will work to complete the requirements for their Standard Professional Certificate.

The BCTR Practitioner Teacher Program is a Maryland State Department of Education approved certification provider designed to expedite the certification of individuals with content area expertise. The Practitioner Teacher Program is the certification provider for all BCTR Residents, recommending qualified Residents for their Standard Professional Certificate. Certification decisions incorporate comprehensive assessments, and can include principal observations and documented evidence of student achievement, in addition to state-mandated requirements.

There are several requirements that must be satisfactorily completed in order for a Resident to earn an SPC I, and coursework is a major component of these requirements. Depending upon their certification area, Residents will have between 18 and 24 months to complete all of the requirements for an SPC I, though general education Residents may be ready to apply at the conclusion of their first year in the classroom.

Residents who are recommended for a Standard Professional Certificate can expect it to become valid upon expiration of their Resident Teacher Certificate, at the conclusion of their second year in the classroom.
